Understanding Learning Mode

After your Moen Flo Shutoff is installed on your home's main water supply line and begins detecting water usage, it enters a Learning Mode that typically lasts 14–28 days. During this period, the device analyzes your household's normal water-use patterns to establish a baseline for monitoring and protection.

Think of Learning Mode as the system "getting to know your home." The more typical water usage it observes, the more effective leak detection and protection will be once learning is complete.

How Long Does Learning Mode Last?
  • Typically lasts 14 days with normal water usage but may last up to 28 days.
  • Begins automatically after installation, reset, or a re-learning event.
  • Ends automatically once sufficient usage data has been collected.
  • No manual action is required to complete the process.
What Happens During Learning Mode?

While Learning Mode is active, FloSense™ is focused on observing water usage patterns rather than enforcing usage-based protection.

You may notice:

  • A Learning banner in the Moen Flo app.
  • Flo Modes are unavailable until learning is complete.
  • Automatic shutoff for usage-based events is disabled.
  • Certain alerts may be limited while the system gathers data.
  • If Moen Flo Detectors are also linked to the Moen Flo Shutoff, automatic shutoff can still occur, but usage specific automatic shutoffs will not.
How does Learning Mode affect alerts?

During Learning Mode, you will not receive water-related alerts because the Moen Flo Shutoff has not yet established a baseline for your home's normal water usage. The device is actively collecting and analyzing data to understand your household's water habits and determine what constitutes unusual activity. As a result, leak alerts, unusual usage notifications, and automatic shutoff protection are unavailable until Learning Mode is complete. Once the learning process is finished, the system can more accurately detect anomalies and provide alerts designed to help protect your home from potential water damage.

What You Can Still Do

Although certain features are unavailable while your Moen Flo Shutoff is in Learning Mode, you can still monitor your home's water usage through the Moen Flo app. The device continues to collect and record water data while it learns your household's normal usage patterns.

To track your water usage during Learning Mode:

  • Open the Moen Flo app and navigate to the Dashboard.
  • Monitor water flow activity to identify when and how water is being used throughout your home.
  • View device status and system information.
  • Open or close the valve from the Moen Flo app or directly on the device.
  • Create or adjust Manual Overrides if needed. However, Manual Overrides are not active while the device is in Learning Mode and will resume functioning once learning is complete. For instructions on creating Manual Overrides, haga clic aquí.
  • Check for potential small drips through the MicroLeak Test
  • Use the information to better understand your household's consumption habits and identify opportunities to conserve water.

Keep in mind that while water usage data is available, the system has not yet established a baseline for normal activity. As a result, unusual usage alerts, leak notifications, and automatic shutoff protection are not active until Learning Mode is complete. Once the learning process is finished, the Moen Flo Shutoff will use the collected data to more accurately detect potential issues and provide alerts designed to help protect your home.

Note: Learning Mode does not affect your ability to view water usage information or manually turn your water supply on and off through the Moen Flo app. The Moen Flo Shutoff continues to measure and display water activity while the system learns your home's unique water-use patterns.

Important Limitations

During Learning Mode:

  • Automatic shutoffs for usage-based events will not occur.
  • Full usage-based leak protection is temporarily unavailable.
  • Flo Modes cannot be changed.
  • Manual Overrides are not applied until Learning Mode ends. For instructions on creating Manual Overrides, haga clic aquí.
  • Some notifications and alerts may be limited while the system learns your home's usage patterns.
How to Help Learning Mode Complete Successfully

For the most accurate learning:

  • Use water normally throughout the learning period, including showers, laundry, dishwashing, and irrigation.
  • Keep the device powered and connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Avoid extended periods with little or no water usage, such as vacations or prolonged absences.
  • Allow the system to observe a variety of normal household water events.
Watch for Background Water Usage

Small, ongoing water draws can affect how the system learns.

Common examples include:

  • Refrigerator ice makers
  • Reverse osmosis (RO) systems
  • Pool auto-fill systems
  • Water softeners
  • Other appliances with intermittent water demand
How to Check for Background Water Usage
  1. Open the Moen Flo app.
  2. Navigate to Devices > Flo Shutoff (or device nickname)
  3. View the Live Flow Rate.
  4. If water is not actively being used but flow is still present (for example, 0.1-0.5 GPM), a background water draw may exist.
Why Background Water Use Matters

Identifying background water usage helps FloSense better distinguish normal behavior from potential leaks and unusual activity once protection features are fully enabled.

What Happens After Learning Mode?

When Learning Mode is complete, the system automatically returns to Home Mode.

At that point:

  • Full alerts and notifications resume.
  • Automatic shutoff protection becomes active.
  • Flo Modes become available.
  • Manual Overrides begin applying again. For instructions on creating Manual Overrides, haga clic aquí.
  • FloSense uses the learned behavioral patterns to identify abnormal water usage more accurately.
Why is Manual Override disabled during Learning Mode?

Manual Overrides allow the Moen Flo Shutoff to ignore certain water-usage events that would otherwise be considered unusual. During Learning Mode, the system is still establishing a baseline of your home's normal water-use patterns. Allowing Manual Overrides during this period could interfere with the learning process and reduce the accuracy of the data being collected. Once Learning Mode is complete and the system has learned your household's typical water habits, Manual Overrides become available and can be configured as needed. For instructions on creating Manual Overrides, haga clic aquí.

Manual Override Review

If you previously created a Manual Override because the device was generating alerts for a specific water event, consider reviewing or removing the override after Learning Mode completes. FloSense may have successfully learned the event, making the override unnecessary. For instructions on creating Manual Overrides, haga clic aquí.

When Should Learning Mode Be Run Again?

A new learning period may be beneficial if:

  • You install irrigation or other new water-using devices.
  • Your household water usage patterns change significantly.
  • You return to a property after an extended absence, and the device was left in Home Mode.
  • The property transitions between vacant and occupied use.
  • Major plumbing changes are made that affect normal water consumption patterns.
  • Reach out to Smart home support if a new learning period is required
When should a device go through a reset learning?
  • New tenant moves into rental property
  • Device was physically removed and installed in a new home
  • A major plumbing change. For Example, irrigation system was moved so it no longer is being monitored by the Moen Flo Shutoff.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is Learning Mode?

Learning Mode is the initial setup period that begins after your Moen Flo Shutoff is installed and starts detecting water usage. During this time, which typically lasts 14-28 days, the system analyzes your household's normal water-use patterns to establish a baseline for monitoring and protection.

Why does Learning Mode take 14-28 days?

The Moen Flo Shutoff needs time to observe your home's daily routines, such as showers, laundry cycles, dishwashing, irrigation schedules, and other water-use activities. Collecting data over multiple days helps the system better understand what is normal for your household.

Will I receive leak or unusual usage alerts during Learning Mode?

No. Because the system has not yet established a baseline for normal water usage, alerts for leaks, unusual activity, and other water events are not generated during Learning Mode. This helps prevent inaccurate or unnecessary notifications while the system is calibrating.

Is automatic shutoff protection active during Learning Mode?

No. Automatic shutoff protection is unavailable while the system is learning your home's water-use patterns. Once Learning Mode is complete, the Moen Flo Shutoff can begin detecting abnormal conditions and respond according to your selected Flo Mode.

Why can't I change Flo Modes during Learning Mode?

Flo Modes are disabled because the system is still establishing its baseline. Since monitoring and automatic protection settings rely on learned water-use patterns, mode changes are unavailable until Learning Mode is complete.

Why is Manual Override disabled during Learning Mode?

Manual Overrides are designed to allow specific water-usage events that might otherwise be identified as unusual. During Learning Mode, the system is actively collecting data to understand your household's normal water habits. Allowing overrides during this period could interfere with the learning process and affect the accuracy of future monitoring and protection features. For instructions on creating Manual Overrides, haga clic aquí.

Can I track my water usage during Learning Mode?

Yes. The Moen Flo Shutoff continues to collect and display water-usage information while Learning Mode is active. You can view current and historical water usage through the Moen Flo app to better understand your home's water consumption.
