A Small Drip Detected alert typically appears after the Moen Flo Shutoff performs a MicroLeak Test. The alert means the device detected a very small amount of water movement somewhere in the home's plumbing system. Most small drips are not necessarily dangerous in nature and are relatively easy to locate.
Small drips are often easy to correct, but they can also be an early sign of a plumbing issue. Finding and correcting the source can help protect the home from larger water-related problems.
Why no flow may appear in the app: The Moen Flo Shutoff can detect water movement that is too small to appear as active water flow in the Control Panel of the Moen Flo app.

How to Find the Source of a Small Drip
Check for Visible Drips
Inspect common sources of small water leaks throughout the home.
Faucets, Shower Heads, and Hose Bibbs
- Verify all fixtures are fully closed.
- Tighten handles if needed.
- Check for visible dripping water.
Important: Hose bibbs are a common source of small leaks. If a hose is attached, turn off the water at the hose bibb instead of relying only on the hose nozzle. Some hose nozzles allow small amounts of water to pass through, which can cause the MicroLeak Test to fail.

- Inspect the toilet tank and flapper.
- A worn or damaged flapper can allow water to leak slowly from the tank.
- The fill valve may continue refilling the tank, creating a small but continuous water loss.
Verify Proper Installation
Confirm that the Moen Flo Shutoff:
- Is installed in the correct water flow direction.
- Is installed on the home's main water supply line.
The device should be installed:
- After the home's main shutoff valve.
- After the pressure reducing valve, if one is present.
- Before plumbing branches off to fixtures throughout the home.
If the device is installed before a pressure reducing valve, pressure tank, pressure pump, or another device that changes pressure, contact a licensed plumber to correct the installation.
Next: After completing these checks, run another MicroLeak Test from the Control Panel in the Moen Flo app. If the alert returns, continue to Step 2.
Listen for Running Water
Walk through the home and listen for running water near toilets, faucets, and water-connected appliances. A failing toilet flapper is one of the most common causes of a Small Drip Detected alert. If no running water is heard, continue to Step 3.
Isolate Fixtures and Water-Using Devices
If the source is not obvious, turn off the angle stop valves for fixtures throughout the home. For faucets, turn off both the hot and cold water supplies. Check for moisture or visible drips as each fixture is shut off.
Be sure to include all fixtures:
- Faucets and toilets
- Outdoor hose bibbs and pool valves
- Ice makers and home humidifier systems
- Drip irrigation and misting systems
- Reverse osmosis water filters
- Tankless water heaters
- Hot water recirculation systems
- Expansion tanks and other water-using devices
Hot Water Recirculation Systems
Hot water recirculation systems may affect the MicroLeak Test. These systems can run year-round and may be more active during colder months, which can cause repeated false alerts.
Toilet check: After turning off the toilet water supply, flush the toilet. If the tank refills, tighten the angle stop valve further to fully stop the water flow.
Run the MicroLeak Test Again
- Open the Control Panel in the Moen Flo app.
- Run another MicroLeak Test.
If the test passes: The drip likely came from one of the fixtures or systems that was turned off.
If the test still fails: Continue checking additional systems, such as irrigation or concealed plumbing.
Reintroduce Fixtures Gradually
- Turn the water back on to two fixtures at a time.
- Run the MicroLeak Test.
- If the test passes, leave those fixtures on, open two more fixtures, and test again.
- If the test fails, turn off one of the two fixtures that was just reopened and test again.
- Repeat until the fixture causing the drip is identified or all fixtures have been reopened.
Check Irrigation Systems
If the irrigation system is connected to the home's plumbing, the Moen Flo Shutoff may detect a leak in that system.
Determine Whether Irrigation Is Included
- Turn on the irrigation system.
- Open the Moen Flo app.
- Check whether water flow appears in the Control Panel.
If water flow appears, that irrigation section is included in the MicroLeak Test.
Isolate the Irrigation System
- If a separate shutoff valve is available, turn off the water to the irrigation system.
- Run the MicroLeak Test again.
If the test passes, the leak may be in an irrigation component after the shutoff valve. Inspect visible piping and irrigation valves. If needed, contact a plumber, landscaper, or gardener for help locating and repairing the leak.
When to Contact a Plumber
If the source cannot be found after completing these steps, the leak may be behind a wall, in the attic, underground, or in other concealed plumbing. Contact a licensed plumber for a thorough inspection if the issue cannot be identified or resolved.
